Deep within the mesmerizing rolling fields, lived a shepherd boy. His existence was mostly pure, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was essentially to look after his flock of sheep.
Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the breezes among the solo tree on the peak were his only co-dwellers. Day upon day, looking out for his responsibilities instilled in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
However, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. During one such occasion out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plan.
Tales of predators preying on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a joke on the villagers.
One afternoon he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This trick continued for here a couple of more days. Yet, one morning, a real wolf actually come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once broken, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
